Domain Scams

Here is something to be aware of – it’s not illegal but could be seen as unethical…..your call on this one…

I received a letter in the mail (real mail not email) about renewal of one of my domains. I won’t say the company name but it started off like this….

“As a courtesy to domain name holders we are sending you this notification of the domain name registration that is due to expire in the next few months. When you switch today you can take advantage of our best savings.”

Now here is a couple of points:

1. They are sending this at least 3 months ahead of when its needed- (they are getting ahead of the company you have your domain name with currently)

2. A busy small business owner, may miss the text about switching and just pay the bill.

3. Its priced in AUS Dollars, coming from a US based company, and as a comparison, to renew a .com domain would be about  $12.00 (AUS) – The best “savings” choice was $45.00 (AUS)

Here is what the letter looks like:

A search  for “Domain Renewal Group”- will tell more about what they doing….

Tell as many others, who have domains about this.

  1. Not really a scam says:

I would not agree that this is a “scam” – at least not in the true sense of the word

Yes it is very questionable business behavior and I would not recommended it but in the end at least you are paying for and getting your domain re-registered ( at stupid premium I agree ) but that is far better than the 1000′s of “make money online” scams that make up 99 % of the offers in your industry.

Yes you can make money online but it is done with a long term steady commitment to growing an online “business” not some “secret formula” that you can buy for limited time for $47

That is the true definition of a scam – asking for payment so something that you will not be delivering, if your going to warn people about dirty dealings I would start in you own backyard of ” make money onliners”

  2. I received this same thing in the post a few years back. Good on you mate for posting it to everyone Paul. Quite a “shot gun” approach this hard letter it is damn sneaky on all accounts.

Thanks for the email. I actually got a similar email and I was wondering why since my renewal is not due until almost end of the year.

    Paul,

I have about 500+/- domains names that I am gradually developing into websites. Perhaps because the quantity of domains that I have is above average, I’ve already been hit buy these guys. They have been at it for at least 5 years now.

Every month or so I get the exact same letter, usually for different domains that I own. First time you get one, it freaks you out. It looks like an official invoice! I can see how it could easily get paid by a staffer or someone in a hurry. With all the domains out there I bet a lot of domains actually get transfered.

Where I bet they make there money is the fee (I’m sure) to transer the doamin name AWAY from them once they have it. Think about that… They either sell you a new hosting account or you pay to have the domain moved back.

I’ve read the document thoroughly and you will not have a leg to stand on. You’re screwed! Glad to see you’ve pick up on this and are writing about it… Let me know if I can help!

    With best regards,

    Hi Paul,

That is a very good point. I pay for my own domain name monthly instead of yearly via my ISP. Bonus of this is there’s no danger of forgettig to renew and losing my domain and I would be suspicious if I saw a message like that because the ISP renews it automatically for me. Seems to be quite handy for avoiding stuff like this. :-)
