It’s not really it’s about 2 things:

1.    Knowing what s important to do
2.    Doing the work without over complicating it


Let me show you an example, a few years ago I spent a long weekend analyzing the top ranked sites in Google. Only to work that the results didn’t make sense.

Then I was looking at the density of the words on the site and how the sites were. This is how many times the particular search term was used in realtion to the total number of words on the page.

People still claim that a page should have a density of 2%, which is a nice figure which makes them look informed.

If this was true (and just that simple)every top ranked page would have this density – and they don’t.

Also it’s not the main thing you should be focusing on

Here are the import things to focus on:

1. Your keywords and where you rank now (the starting point)

2. Creating incoming links

I am going to give you a simple action plan you can use.

I am going to presume that you have decided what your keywords (what you want get to the top of Google for).

For the purpose of example, let’s use these search terms:

“Black cat toys” and “White Cat Nip”

To get stated we can use some free tools:

1.    Ranktacker Software – free version never expires and is useful enough for now.

It has the advantage of working in all countries and being accurate (many free online rank tracking services are not)
2.    Statcounter.com (link opens new window)

This simple tracker goings on your site and tells you where how visitors are getting to your site. It’s really easy to use, rather than larger tracking options like the more powerful Google Analytics.
Now  I am going show one proven way to get incoming links. It’s a not really a “sexy” or “cool” way to get incoming links, but it just works ,and it brings qualified visitors.

I have seen too many courses which show 101 ways to get traffic,   how about getting just one that works,  then learn the others- doesn’t that make sense?

Here it is: Basic Article Marketing.


For those of you that are new,  this is the concept of writing simple articles, and then submitting them to online article directories, allowing you to create  links back to your site.

Firstly what  you are going to write about and how many words will you need? In our example we could use:

“5 free ways to get rid of cat fleas forever”

Or

“How Important is Cat Teeth Care? (this is a real article in use now)

Would those be subjects that cat lovers would find helpful?

How many words?

Most articles online are shorter than you would see in a magazine, mainly due to the need to read from the screen so around 300 words is normally enough.

The articles should be interesting, useful but they don’t need to be a work of art,  so keep it simple.

The next Part: The Resource box. This is the information about you and your website which is going to be placed at the end of the article.

Here is an example, complete with links.

Make it interesting and offer something for free, after all, don’t you want to know how he survived ;)

Now where are you going to submit your article. The number one place is a site called EzineArticles.com
Very often, the articles themselves bring traffic, because EZA (EzineArticles.com) is an large old and powerful site with millions of articles.

The new articles themselfs will rank high in Google (at least for a couple of months)

In looking over where my traffic comes from, articles on ezine articles, almost always bring me new visitors on a regular basis.

This is where Statcounter.com comes in, they show you where your traffic comes from (keywords people searched for to get to you and websites they came from)

Ok, so you have the basic idea, but here is where people go wrong – Numbers!

Article marketing works with numbers, if you put out 2 or 3 articles and lose interest (which is common) then you will get zero benefit.

You need to put a lot out, at least 30, preferably 1 per day over 30 days.

The more the better

The problem is most people don’t like to write, plus it takes time and understanding how Ezine Articles.com works, is important, because they approve the articles before they are published.

Also I have recently heard they are making people pay for new EZA accounts (they were free for a small amount of articles, then you have to pay)

This latest update is called “Caffine” which has been going for the last few months (they just finished it) – Googles official site doesn’t tell you much but full details are here: Caffeine Update (Link opens new window)

The short answer for the update is changing content on your site is good. Nothing new here, as having your site updated a lot (think facebook pages – always changing) is always been a factor, as it brings Google web spider  in more often.

So this brings up the question- how often should I update my site?

As much as you can, but a good number is monthly

As far as what still works and is more important  – incoming links. I needed to prove this, for my own piece of mind……So…..last week I create one new incoming link to my site (it was on a page with a PR (Page Rank) of 5 with focused Text in the link (anchor text)

I made no other changes to my site in any way.

Around about 7 days later, I checked on my ranking for the key term and it had jumped up 2 places and was above of  PR 5 site (mine is only a PR3)

I also had another client jump from not in the top 100 sites to number 15, all with the last 10 days just by creating a lot of incoming links, from a range of blog

Conclusion- Not much has really changed lately, what has worked in the last year, still works. I now have access to a large amount of blogs all hosted separately, if you are interesting in getting these links to your site, they can be created very affordably. Drop me note here.

The principle is all about what is defined as “duplicate content”. Now in many forums there is a lot of mis information about this subject, and can spark a loud debate among experts.

There are 2 sides to this argument

1. On your site duplication
2. Duplicatiopn on the internet as a whole.

Lets cover the first one, as that where my clients main problem is.

Google has stated this:

” Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar”

What Google is meaning where it has been done on purpose to create a lot of similar page aiming at similar keywords, but very little actual change in content or each page.

The problem with my clients site is that the home page has been duplicated exactly. To see what I sent to my Client (Lisa) – Check Out This Short Video

Also the internal linking structure is not correct on the site. This is how I help my clients with webdesigners as they don’t keep up with this type of information.
Duplication on the internet as a whole.

This is where your site content (or content you distribute, such as articles or press releases) has been duplicated on a lot of sites.

Here I a couple of points:

1. Control- You cannot control this and Google knows that.

If there was a penalty despicable webmaster owners would copy content 10 thousand times and post it on line on free blogging sites and link the content to you to make your Google rankings drop.

2 . It happens ALL the time – Press releases, articles etc get copied all the time escpecilly if you a news site CNN

What Google does is take more notice of the site which has a higher “Content Importance”

What I mean is if you copied Amazon pages completely, Google is more like to rank Amazon that your pages. Amazon has a higher Content Importance, than your copy of it, and most likely just remove your content from any Google searches, or drop them so low they will never be found. (you become less important)

In the case of an article, it simply means that some links to you from sites which hold articles will count and other versions of the articles won’t be counted- that’s about it.

Many millions in sales has been sold in regard to article spinners, Software programs, that create many article versions with a certain percentage of difference than the original version, but the same content

On the whole, wasted money, and very time consuming programs to to use as well. A better option is to just get new promotional articles produced.

So as a summary, make sure your site is right, and don’t worry to much duplicated content away from your site.

I received a letter in the mail (real mail not email) about renewal of one of my domains. I won’t say the company name but it started off like this….

“As a courtesy to domain name holders we are sending you this notification of the domain name registration that is due to expire in the next few months. When you switch today you can take advantage of our best savings.”

Now here is a couple of points:

1. They are sending this at least 3 months ahead of when its needed- (they are getting ahead of the company you have your domain name with currently)

2. A busy small business owner, may miss the text about switching and just pay the bill.

3. Its priced in AUS Dollars, coming from a US based company, and as a comparison, to renew a .com domain would be about  $12.00 (AUS) – The best “savings” choice was $45.00 (AUS)

Here is what the letter looks like:

A search  for “Domain Renewal Group”- will tell more about what they doing….

Tell as many others, who have domains about this.
