Free Link Building basics: The key to zero cost web site promotion
By admin |
Having an effective Link Building strategy creates new paths of traffic to your site. The major search engines take this into account, when listing your site.
At the same time many web site owners lack the understanding of what they are trying to achieve. This especially when it comes to results.
Link building is all about the long-term goal of action producing traffic. Unlike Google Adwords, which is instant and you pay for that instant result, link building is about the small trickle of visitors every day from many hundreds of sites.
Let’s run the numbers:
100 different sites sending you 2 visitors per day – 200 unique visitors a day
10% of them joining your list- 20 email opt-in visitors per day
At the end of the month – 600 on your list- not a bad start, for some “sweat equity” also known as work.
Next month –you are listed in another 100 sites – end of the month another subscribers per month- total list 1200
Hit month three- same as the last two- so now a list of 1800 which is around about when Google updates its ranking algorithm, and you start to get natural search engine traffic- So you are starting to gain momentum.
Then you look closer into your web hosting statistics and find the majority of your visitors are come from posts you did in specific forums – Now you can focus you area of work to where you are getting results from.
Also you try a new more up front design for your email opt-in, and add a free gift. Now you have found a way to convert more traffic to take an action.
If you need to know where your traffic is coming from, in the easiest way, with a free tool check out the invisible counter from statcounter.com
Some small business owners become frustrated when they don’t see results, and then comes doubt if its working and then they go off to try another method of promotion. As long as you understand the process and the way the system works, its being a long race and not a sprint for traffic then you will have the results you expect.

This is a very nice and clean looking site! I agree with your linking ideas but do have a question…
I see at the bottom of the page you have links to non-related sites. Do you think this might lead to theme bleeding or is not not an issue with you?

Hi Mike,
In this case, my blog serves a couple of purposes- a to link to my new sites (rather than submiting the new sites- which I dont recommend)
Personally, I believe that the power of incoming links over rides a lot on on page factors- I do how however believe that sites should be single based themed- eg: “wedding” as a base keyword.
Have seen a video online whichs claims that the theme bleeding is a cause of lack of ranking, if a closer look was taken- link text (quality links) would be shown as the more likely reason for the competiton ranking higher.
To give another point of view have just done a project where a site had 2000 more links to a site that competition- however due to the inconsistant linking strtergy- nil ranking…..
Last (rave) point….I try not to “over analyse” whay a site does not rank…..as it will quickly result in loss of hair- trying to understand.
I am about to launch a new site to help answer these questions and more- maybe you would like a sneek look before it opens? -drop me an email paule@DigitalAwol.com

Hi Paul,
Your comment:
“To give another point of view have just done a project where a site had 2000 more links to a site that competition- however due to the inconsistant linking strtergy- nil ranking…..”
Could you elaborate a bit more on this. Other than having totally junk anchor text I would think the power of numbers would have shot the site up. Unless the links were built too fast maybe?

Basically it confuses Google (which makes sense) focused link text (done in the right way) provides the correct inforamation google is looking for- I am covering this am more in my new site: Http://www.SEOTrainingLive.com/ which will allow for keeping up to date with what “works” -not the opinions…..
