Spam Back Links

By admin |

Lately I have been attracting spam links on my sites. These “clowns” seem to think that you can put a link on a site and use someone else’s site to benefit them.

Let me explain more:

1. Blog spam links - Every day links appear on my blog all about terms that have no relation to my site. The links in the comments are to……shall I say female video sites? - I am sure you get the picture ;)

Now there are 2 things wrong with these links:

1. 99% of them are never seen because the are removed by my wordpress blog software, before they even appear.

2. If they did slip through they are “No Follow” Links which means Google does not count them. (Yahoo does count them but does not give them Trust or benefit )

You can see it here:

1. Firstly “Right mouse” click on the link in the blog and select  “Properties”:

no follow

no

Here is the resulting Information:

The no follow link is set as default within all wordpress blogs. In some case webmasters have installed a plugin to make the links “follow”  (normal links) This was done to encourage readers to post links.

If the content on the site is good, and you are telling everyone about your posts, (via an email list) then you will have comments any way

Its not just for the search engines, its for traffic. If readers want to a URL of the site, WITH a relevant comment…Most blog owners will leave it on there. (I will too – hint hint)

Here is a long article on how the engines (from the engines) treat the no follow:

http://www.searchenginejournal.com/how-google-yahoo-askcom-treat-the-no-follow-link-attribute/4801/

1. Also I have been getting other spam links on my dog site.  This is because I used a program called Coppermine Photo Gallery- It’s a free program which allows you to run your own Photo Gallery. Like most Free online programs, it has tags at the bottom of each page: “”Powered by Coppermine Photo Gallery”

Now if you copy and past the exact term above- including quotes you will find 17 million results (which is 17 million links) Actually the site has around 32 million links to it, but you get the idea.

Now the software allows you to install it on your site and allow comments- You can see what happened here:

I will leave it up for the moment. Main point is these are normal follow links. Again, if someone had left good relevant comments, I would have been inclined to leave them up.

How can you benefit from this?

1. If anybody has an idea/skills for software, like the Coppermine- Talk to me!

2. If you have time, you can spend time looking for sites, which have photos, which are part of your target market and make good comments, with your URL attached but don’t Spam them!

Hope this is of benefit
Paul
